Default why do some pans get ruined in the dishwasher?

I've had some pans discolor when they are washed. Any ideas on how to keep this from happening?

Thanks in advance for your help,

It might be cause they're aluminum rather than stainless steel. Hope you're not putting cast iron in there!!

They are cake pans...even wilton cake pans. Hate to throw them out. Is there a special way to wash aluminum to keep the discoloration from happening?

I never put pots and pans in the dishwasher because of that reason. JMHO

Yep, hand wash them. I think there is something in the dishwasher detergent that reacts with the aluminum.
Communicate. It can't make things any worse!

I never put pans/pots in either. I paid too much for them to get ruined.
