Default How to keep salad in a bag fresh?

I like the bag salad because it is so easy, I hate chopping. I only use half a bag and seems next day it goes bad, I have tried using the green veggie keeper bags and that doesn't work, also used paper towels & green bags too. I think I may just go buy a head of romaine & make my own, the head lettuce keeps better plus it would be cheaper. Does anyone have any hints?

I just squeeze as much air as possible out of the bag fold the top down several times, and put a rubber band around it. That will usually keep it for a day.

I find the field greens in the plastic container last much longer. They are quite a bit more expensive tho.

We quit buying bagged salads for that reason. We buy a head of leaf lettuce, a bag of 3 heads of romaine and a head of iceberg. It keeps in a covered bowl for longer than the bags, so you might put it in a bowl and cover it. We eat a lot of salad, so all that lettuce only lasts us a few days!

I quit buying bag lettuce because it seemed each time I was getting a lot more stalks and a lot less lettuce! Only rinse what you are going to eat, keep the salad in the bag moisture free and it will last a couple more days.

I've heard ( I think from here) that the Debbie Myers green bags really work. I bought one of those round disks that you keep in the veggie bin. Less expensive - works ok.

Ginger, I agree! The greens in the plastic container (Costco) do last a long time. Plus the empty containers make great storage boxes.

Ha ha... I always called those stalks "lettuce asses." Babe loves them cause he likes the bitter lettuces.

Can anyone smell and/or taste the difference in the bagged lettuce versus when you cut the lettuce yourself? It could be just us, but DH and I can tell the difference in about a second. We eats salads everyday and just have a very hard time with the bagged lettuce.

Ditto!! I think the heads of lettuce just keep longer, even when cut or torn up. Keeping the salad in a tupperware container makes it last much longer.

I also think it's something they add to those bagged salads that supposed to keep it fresh longer, but it certainly doesn't.
