    Question Shelled Pecans Question

My Stepdad bought a 50 pound bag of pecans. He shelled a good amount the other day. Do I need to do anything to them before I use them in a recipe? I am going to make the Candied Pecans. I wasn't sure if I should toast them first. Thanks!

No, just make sure you wash them good to get all the little pieces of stuff out of them! They will roast as you are baking them when you candy them. I love pecans!

I've never washed pecans. I just make sure that when I shell them, that I get everything out of all the creases. Don't want to break a tooth on a shell.

If I shell them myself I don't wash, but if I buy or someone gives them to me I wash! Just safer that way

I've never washed pecans either - pecans also freeze beautifully - good time to put some in the freezer for the holiday baking in Nov. and Dec. If you vacuum seal them, and put in the freezer they will keep a couple of years.

Definitely freeze some up because it dosen't take all that long for them to start tasting rancid if you don't. Just make sure if you wash them to get them good and dried out before bagging them up.

*hitting self in head* Why didn't I ever think of that? We have a few trees and usually just throw the shells away
