What does Gouda Cheese Taste Like?

I am not familiar at all with this Type of Cheese and want to try a new recipe for BBQ Chicken Pizza on the Grill tonight. Is it a strong Flavor or a Mild Flavor? What would you compare it to?

I don't want to make this and not like it! If need be, I'll sub a different kind.

    Thanks for the Input!

Very strong pungent taste but very good. Maybe like a really strong Swiss.

I would say more sweet when not aged but can be pungent as it ages longer but it is not overwhelming and I think your recipe sounds really good. Ususally it is wrapped in wax so do not eat that part - just read how long it is aged for and maybe not get the smoked. Will you share the recipe if it is good??

Gouda is a wonderful cheese and perfect with wine, fruit and nuts!!

Thanks for your input Gals! I think I will give it a shot and do Gouda on one of the Pizza's. I guess I should know if I don't like it My Husband probably will, so I'll be safe. I'll be using the Boboli Crusts for this one.

          Here's the recipe I'm trying tonight.....It came from Cooks.com

          Grilled Barbecued Chicken Pizza Recipe
          Source: Cooking Light magazine

6 servings (serving size: 1/3 pizza)

          RECIPE INGREDIENTS

          2/3 cup barbecue sauce, divided

1 cup (about 6 ounces) roasted skinned, boned chicken breast (such as Tyson), chopped

          2 (10-inch) Quick-and-Easy Pizza Crusts

          Cooking spray

1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded smoked Gouda cheese

1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

          1/4 cup sliced green onions

          RECIPE METHOD

Combine 1/4 cup barbecue sauce and chicken in a bowl. Toss well; set aside.

          Prepare grill.

Place 1 crust on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 3 minutes or until puffy and golden. Turn crust, grill-mark side up; spread with 3 tablespoons barbecue sauce. Top with half of Gouda, chicken mixture, mozzarella, and green onions. Cover; grill 3 to 4 minutes or until cheese melts and crust is lightly browned. Repeat with remaining crust and toppings.

Isn't this place great, to ask and learn about all kinds of things we've never been exposed to? I've never tried Gouda, either, and I love cheese.

Let us know how your recipe turns out....sounds good.

Well, since it calls for smoked gouda, then use the smoked. This looks like a great pizza. I think I remember seeing this in the magazine. Please let us know how it turns out.

I had Gouda once before, and if I remember correctly I thought it tasted a bit like colby/cheddar. That recipe looks really good.

Just thought I'd let you all know we thought this Pizza was Delicious!
I ended up using 2 Chicken Breasts from the Deli and just kinda hand shredded it into pieces. You were right on the Smoked Gouda Cheese!
A very tasty Cheese it is! Next time I make it I actually think I may double the Gouda as it wasn't as destinct a flavor I think because of the BBQ Sauce kinda covering it up. I used Ken Davis Brand which was very good too.
I think you'd like it.....Give it a try sometime! Very Easy and Quick cooking time!

That pizza sounds yummy Smoked Gouda makes the best fried cheese, like the fried cheese sticks, but it blows those away!

Great review on the pizza ~ did you know there is a thread in Tried and True called "Pizza-Pizza" and you should include your recipe there.
