  • Pineapple is Ripe!!!

Yeah it is finaly ready to eat. Not overly large but man it smells good. I have to share it with family since the plant belonged to my mom. So after I post this I'll go cut it up into fourths and deliver it.
First picture is what it looked like when we first discovered it.

And now full grown. Sorry the second one is blurry no one but me to hold the camera. It is about the size of my hand tall.

Wow!!! You grew that from a plant. I didn't know they sold pineapple plants. I did make a plant from the top of a pineapple once, it was doing good then it got moldy. I hope it was delicious. Good job.

That is GORGEOUS! Yes, do tell us how it compares to a store bought one! I'll bet it is so good!!

I am curious, too-is this a plant she started and did it grow outside or is it a houseplant? ai started one once from a pineapple top, but it died before it reached any size.

            Re: Pineapple is Ripe!!!

This one was started from a pineapple from the grocery store. If you grab the top and TWIST it off you will get a cone shapped bottom. We placed that in a jar with some water (most of the plant held up out of the water) untill roots formed and then placed it in soil. It was kept inside most of the time. The 'leaves' have stickers on them and so can be a bit sharp. What I found out this year is that you can force them to bloom, the bloom is what turns into the pineapple. Well we didn't force it but my older son noticed the pineapple you see in the first pictures. So it has taken a few months for it to grow and ripen. We are hoping for another one next year.
And it tastes better than any pineapple I have ever eaten. So sweet and juicy!! YUMMERS!!

In the fall you take about 4 ripe apples and place them in the dirt at the base of the plant. Then secure the whole pineapple plant in a plastic bag for one week. The gasses let off by the apples are what forces it to bloom. Then after a week remove bag and icky apples.
