  • Question: A Social degree

I was talking to my uncle who has a grandaughter that works for an Insurance company. She travels to all the tragic events..like Hurricane Katrina, tornados, etc. She gets paid $72,000 a year for it too.

I said I would like to work for the Red Cross and go do that, but I thought that the Red Cross was pretty much volunteer and I can't take time off of work, but would love to be there to help in those kinds of situations. So he said I should go to college and get a "social" degree.

I am curious what kinds of jobs you can get with that degree?

Could he have meant a 'Social Sciences' degree?? That term covers everything from anthropology, political science, linguistics...Perhaps you could check the online curriculum at a couple of colleges and see what type of classes they offer in their Social Sciences department.

Also, not all Red Cross workers are volunteer. They rely heavily on volunteers to do the 'grunt work', but the organizational body ie the people who co-ordinate and run the various relief efforts are not volunteer.
Communicate. It can't make things any worse!

I am thinking he is probably thinking along the lines of a Sociology degree. Most colleges have a degree plan in this. It is similar to a Psychology degree with the slant on Sociology.

My SIL worked for Red Cross for several years as a phlebotomist. She was a paid employee.
