My dog got sprayed by a skunk!

So DD comes pounding on my bedroom door last night at 11:30p to tell me that Baron my Golden Retriever got sprayed. Oh man! It was enough to gag us! Turned on my trusty computer and Googled "skunk remedys". Heres what I found and it worked! Do you think this recipe should be in T & T? What did people do before computers?

Skunk Remedy

1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
2 tsp liquid soap

Dissolve in a bucket and add enough water to be able to saturate the whole dog. Rub into dog. Do not get in eyes. Let it sit on coat for 5-10 min. before rinsing.

Wow! Thanks for the tip! I heard that tomato juice is a good way to remove the odor. Never had that problem though, but it's nice to know a T&T remendy!

Our Molly seemed to get sprayed once a year. We always used the hydrogen/baking soda remedy. Two things to remember--wet the dog, THEN mix up the solution and NEVER, EVER store any leftovers. They could generate enough gases to explode the storage container.

Also, be very careful around the dog's face. We usually dip a cloth in the solution and wipe the face and then wipe again with a clean cloth.

That has to be the worst smell in the world! Ugh! We had a dog years ago who I swear went out looking for skunks to spray him! The worst time was when DH (who has no sense of smell whatsoever) let him inside and he rolled around on the carpet. I could've brained both of them!! The smell was so bad it turned your stomach. We always used the tomato juice and it worked but there was still a smell.

I read that tomato juice just masks the smell and doesn't get rid of it.

I've gotten to be an expert at this problem,
First use Dawn dish soap as that will get the oily residue off. Then use the peroxide, baking soda, soap mixture. You may have to do this more than once and the peroxide may bleach your furbaby's fur. It did my dog.

I actually used Dawn odor eliminator liquid soap with the peroxide and baking soda.

Who keeps a quart of peroxide around? I just may pick up a few bottles and keep 'em in a closet!

I found it truly amazing that I actually had all the ingredients. I just bought new baking soda to make zucchini bread and bought the Dawn odor eliminator dish soap because it was on sale. There was a big unopened qt. bottle of hydrogen peroxide under the bathroom sink that DH must've bought when he got poison ivy. Weird.

Lucky for you you had all the ingredients, and it worked! I hate that smell, yet it brings back fond childhood memories of vacation trips in the car to Oregon and Washington. lol

I had a Chow that sprayed in the face and neck. I had a Home Remedy book and the title for that subject was, Do the Doggie Douche. The Vinegar one. I went out and bought a gallon or two of White Vinegar instead, way cheaper, and we rubbed it all over real good. let it sit for a few, then rinsed. The smell went away immediatly and never came back. I have seen where someone used the tomato juice... tons of it, on small dog, and after a few days, the smell came back

We had a dog that had monthly encounters with Pepe Le Pew and found that the douche worked perfected! I usually had a stock of 4 - 5 boxes in the laundry room (store brand was just as effective..)

Also.. Frebreeze works like a charm also. (Ran out of douche and sprayed the dog lightly - dabbed it on his face).. locked in the garage and the next morning.. you couldn't tell~

I used three 2-liter bottles of Coca-Cola. Smell was gone.

DD just sent me a photo of a mommy skunk and multiple babies in her backyard in Portland, OR! Yikes!!
