Arrgh!!! I can get 3 of one colour across but only 2 of the other. PLEASE someone post the 'trick' because this is driving me crazy!!.

No, they cannot go backwards.

There is no trick, but I will tell you the steps if you want.
No peeking if you want to figure it out yourself. There may be another way, but this is how I did it.

Move what is on each rock:
3 to 4
5 to 3
6 to 5
4 to 6
2 to 4
1 to 2
3 to 1
5 to 3

4 to 3
