Authorities say a grandmother was arrested for driving around the parking lot of a Marathon grocery store with her 3-year-old child sitting on the roof of the car.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Publix store Tuesday and arrested a 54-year-old woman after she was driving around with her three-year-old granddaughter on the roof of her car.

The grandmother was released from jail 15 hours later.

The woman said Thursday she would never let anything hurt her granddaughter. She says she was driving at "snail-speed" and holding the child's leg.

Authorities say the woman told police she was giving the child some air and letting her have fun.

She faces charges of child abuse. The child is back with her mother.

OMG!!! That is absolutely insane...........I just don't understand what people are thinking when they do stupid things such as this. Wonder if she was drinking or on drugs....

Besides being insane, one of the problems is in the article: She was RELEASED! Keep her stupid butt in jail!

Then I probably shouldn't tell you my kids FAVE Babe story... of how (25 years ago) he duct taped his newborn in his infant seat to his motorcycle so he could snail crawl across base to pick up the other TWO kids at school...

I tell him all the time it's a damn good thing we didn't have to raise kids together!!

But that was 25 years ago, the kid WAS in a car seat. He DID use something to make sure the baby didn't go flying. I think he was very resoursefull!!

When my oldest (now 33) was a baby, we did not have a car seat. Shoot, we didn't even have seatbelts in the car (a '64 chev) If I had to drive anywhere alone with him, he lay on the front seat beside me, with a pillow between him and the floor. I drove with 1 hand on the steering wheel and one hand on his tummy.

Years ago that is how most mothers drove, with the child beside them and I remember when my mom hit the brakes, her arm would go out and hold my brother back. When kids were real little they had the pumpkin seats, but they were not belted down back then.

Funny story, YEARS ago I was driving my Nana home from GOD KNOWS WHERE...when a station wagon cut me off...WELL...my arm went out and landed RIGHT ON MY NANA'S BOOB!!!!! The rest of the day I said to myself (I felt my Nana up!!! EWWWW)

I still laugh when I think of that.

I throw my rt arm out every time I have to stop fast! I grabbed my moms boob once! lol

I'm 46, when I was a kid, I liked to sit in the floorboard of the passenger seat, or I'd lay in behind the backseat in the ledge under the window! That's where I'd lay when we'd go to the movies, all drive-in back then!

but. In my small little town, last year a grandmother had her 3 grand kids, one of them got introuble in our Alsups, convenience store, she put him in the trunk of her car and started to drive away, luckily someone in the parking lot stopped her and called 911. she was arrested. seems it wasn't the first time she put the kids in the trunk when they got into trouble.

Hey Luvs, You gotta go to the Philipines or even to Mexico, where Mom, Dad and 1 or 2 kids will all be on the little putt-putt motorcycle. Dad drives, the littlest kid is sandwiched between Mom and Dad and the bigger kid is stuck between Mom and the (usually) banana-type back of the seat.

I'm sure your Babe had everything well under control

When We Were In Cozumel In April. Scooters Everywhere, Had A Little One Standing On The Floorboard Infront Of Driver, A Small One Inbetween Parents And One On Each Leg Of Mom In The Back!!! Noticed Most Of The Kids Did Have Helmets, Almost No Parents Did. It Was Amazing The Amount Of Infants Carried My Mom's On There.

That's exactly what I did when my daughter was little, no car seats and no seatbelts. By the time my son came along 10 years later, we had to have a baby carseat , belted in to bring him home from the hospital. What a difference 10 years can make.
But this grandmother was nuts and irresponsible, to say the least.
