  • Can you substitute whole wheat flour??

Trying to lose weight (as always) and bought whole wheat flour. Can I just substitute it for white flour? I know the taste will be different, but what about the texture? Has anyone done this? What adjustments have you made to recipes?

It depends on what you are making. You can't really substitute in cakes or waffles or pancakes. For bread, quick breads and muffins, I believe you can substitute up to 2/3 of the amount. But there are loads of recipes that use whole wheat flour. It might be easier just to try a new recipe.

I substituted whole wheat flour in a zucchini bread, it looked ok until it cooled down, then it just kind of caved in in the middle. Looked horrible but tasted ok.

Most recipes call for a mixture.

Wheat flour is also a lot heavier than white flour. It also has a sweeter taste. I think you should try new recipes especially if you will be making bread! Good Luck & Good Health Wishes!!!

Thanks y'all. You are right. I should just look for whole wheat recipes. I didn't think it would be easy.

In a lot of recipes (breads/rolls/pizza dough/pancakes), I use 1/2 white & 1/2 wheat with great results. Do you have certain recipes in mind? I like some recipes with more wheat and others less.

Thanks, Floridagirly, like the Kitchen Savvy site. Bean, I don't make bread. Just trying to cut carbs. Haven't made pancakes or muffins or even cakes much in the last year. Usually make them when someone is visiting or I have to take something somewhere. I was hoping buying whole wheat flour would force me to make baked goods healthier for us and still add some good tasting foods to our life. If you have any recipes that you like, please pass them on. e
