  • Tired of hearing about Katrina

we all lived through it. it was devestating. we rehash it every year.

but it wasn't the hurrcane katrina that flooded new orleans. new orleans survived the hurricane fine. usual, power lines were down, heavy winds and heavy rain, but it was the levee that broke that failed them. granted it was the hurricane that pushed the levee, but it was just a matter of time on which hurricane it was that flooded them..

wish the news would stop mentioning Katrina when they mention Gustav. i feel like it only wigs out the elderly. i feel like it brings up memories of what they went through. causing panic. anxiety. rather than just say evacuate and get out. everyone there knows they have to evacuate, everyone knows what happen 3 years ago.

just stop freaking them, and me out.
I just hold on tighter, to a hand that's stronger...he knows my every thought, he clears my weary heart, and hold's on tighter...

I think they mention Katrina as a reminder how bad it could be , once again. People tend to forget, think it can't happen again. People need to remember how bad it was, so that they take care this time and get out of town, and don't wait until the last minute, etc.

yes I am aware i have a full blown library of DVD's and i could pick something to watch and i have a full list of channels I can watch.

doesn't stop family from calling, who i haven't heard from in quite some time that is all of a sudden concerned for us. and doesn't stop the locals from yappin it up.

doesn't stop the headlines on the news papers I picked up today.

changing the channel doesn't stop all of it.

we rehash alot,9/11 is coming soon, just wait for that one, lol,but i think we need to be reminded sometimes, some tragedies are too much to repeat, and to be reminded could save lives.

People were told to evacute when Katrina hit, and many didn't, or waited until the last minute. And then later got all upset because the government didn't "protect" them, blah, blah , blah...... I think all the officials are trying so very hard to abvoid the mistakes of the past.
Yes, 9 / 11 is coming up and we will remember and yes, " rehash". People still remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Kennedeys's assisinatioin etc. it may not get as much coverage anymore as it used but it is being remembered.

it's one thing to remember, it's another to rehash and upset the elderly.

How do you know the elderly are upset? Maybe they appreciate the warnings and everything that is being done this time?

my last word on this, people need to remember past tragedies,be it war, weather, murder, whatever, and try to not let history repeat itself.

Re: Tired of hearing about Katrina

I have been in the Gulf coast area for 44 years now and I do watch these Hurricanes and do head the warnings to. A hurricane watch is not as bad as the actual warning. I have been through a few of them in my lifetime and I understand waht Stella is saying.
Panic isn't the answer. the technology has been very helpful and the hurricane people are a lot more accurate than they used to be. I remember when there was no notice at all until it was too late...
Right now, you couldn't leave our area if you wanted to. The freeways and highways are back to back traffic with everyone trying to leave.
I can testify to the hysteria it does cause to the elderly. Whole family has gone psycho because of my Mother.
Personally I feel that going to a shelter is the better option when & if we are instructed to leave. I would rather take my chances in a structurally sound shelter than to try & leave and get stuck with no gas stations open and stranded on Interstate & drowning in the car in the floodwaters.
Hurricane Watch---Watch for possibility of Hurricane in your surrounding areas.
Hurricane Warning- You have been warned. Look to the local authorities with instructions, then heed their advice and take action.
Have you made time to listen to the birds today........

Re: Tired of hearing about Katrina

Warnings have been out for days now, you can't say you didn't know. So if people waited until now to leave their town, I imagine they are in a heap of trouble. But why wait until the last minute? Depending on where you live, you know what to expect, and if you don't listen to the experts, then you are on your own and can't really blame anybody.
The military has already flown in people to SA, put them up at one of our airbases. These are people with physical and mental handicaps, I don't know where from. SA once again , is ready and willing to help, the doors are open.

Re: Tired of hearing about Katrina

Watching the news this morning, I was happy to see so much about Gustav coming and them reminding everyone about Katrina. People who didn't leave for Katrina were first in line on buses leaving town... saying, "We won't go thru that again!" If it puts some fear into elderly or whomever... and it takes the form of having PLAN and acting on that plan... remind away!

What we remember, we may not be doomed to repeat. No one wants a repeat of what happened to the people who didn't get out of NO when Katrina hit.

there are lots of surrounding towns who are willing and able to help out. Don't know of any who aren't.

my old high school is designed as an emergency evacuation site. it was a really cool giddy up, everything under one roof... dad said that the school is in place and ready.

All of people are coming from Lousianna,,no room for them here... all motels are booked. You think people would listen to officials by now...but the panic is what drives them into this craziness.
We will go to local structurally sound shelter if needed.
Yesterday was a bigger disaster here than the Hurricane will be...
