  • Anyone planning now for holidays?

Was at Walmart & Walgreens OK they got out the Halloween stuff, also looked up & saw Christmas wrapping ready to go down to next shelf after Halloween. We give out candy no little ones here anymore, Thanksgiving, haven't even thought about it but do need a nice fall tablecloth. Christmas hasn't even entered my mind. Some people are so organized, I did get labels & put in addresses for the Christmas cards so that will save me some time. DD did it for me after complaining last yr about hand writting all the addresses out. Love the computer for that. Most of the family is out of state so gift cards again. I need to come up with something, mailing out packages is expensive. How organized are you?

Bah humbug!!! I could care less about the holidays this year. Just don't think I'll have that holiday spirit this year.

I know how you feel, you got alot on your plate with your Mom and I really don't have that stress, but I feel the same way. DD is away at college, I'm thinking of not putting up a tree, she is in & out mostly out with her friends, It's alot of work & with her expense, Christmas isn't going to me much. I'll just get gift cards, DH & I usually do cologne or something for the house, but we really don't need anything. Az. isn't Christmas for me with the spring like weather, guess you feel it too in Fl. Once the kids grow up it really isn't the same.

I don't "do" Halloween but like to decorate for autumn, which is minimal effort. And my sisters and I are talking about what to do for our parents for Christmas. We generally do a joint gift. Our parents are in their early 80's and it's harder each year to come up with a good gift idea (here's a future thread). I have no clue about our kids, but I've purchased a couple of dog toys and rawhide chews for our pugs. Pugs Rule! I don't do a lot of Christmas decorating either - no kids at home, no grandkids yet - and I generally don't plan food until about a week before any holiday. I love this time of year! Cooler weather, falling leaves, honking geese and sailing into the end of another year. Where does the time go?

I agree once the kids get older the holidays aren't the same anymore. Maybe if I lived in a place where it got cold and snowed I'd be more into it. And of course with construction still at such a low level here, DH hasn't had a regular job in 15 months, so that doesn't help either. With my mom I can't work anymore.

Maryjo, I use to decorate and even won a neighborhood award for Halloween, funny how things happen, I really don't care. I still like to put up some stuff so for Christmas I will, I think the economy now has gotten some people a little down, they are just about making it now with gas & food costs. I feel bad for the families that have little kids, they don't understand about Santa. Disney & cartoon networks will be pushing items, then add in the teens more electronics too. Parents will be going out of their minds with all this. Told DD this college is expensive don't think about big items anymore, things are going to change in my house. She is understanding & knows what is going on. The focus this year in on family & not gifts. She has no job now so she understands. But the little ones, I feel so bad for those families.

I went to Hobby Lobby a couple of days ago and they already had christmas trees out in their lobby, ridiculous. Of course inside Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations etc. Way too early for me. Before you know it we will be listening to christmas songs in the stores while we shop, just crazy.

Re: Anyone planning now for holidays?

DD said she has a Christmas list of things she needs for her apartment, so I told her to get me the list or nothing for her because I want to start NOW with picking things up here and there.

We mostly buy for our 3 kids. But it's simple stuff like gas cards, gift cards, etc. They are 25,25,23 so they aren't little kids any more. They pretty much earn more than DH and I put together anyway and still are living at home (well, the twins do, DD is away at grad school). Our parents are late 70's early 80's so they get grocery cards or gas but they really do not want anything.

Awhile back in another thread I posted that I'd like to drop some folks from my gift exchange list. Not just for me, but they've got some hardships of their own to deal with. Still working up the courage to say something up front AGAIN this year like Sabine suggested. I tried last year but they all poo-poo'd it!!!! I'm hoping they all have a different tune this year and have wised up.

As far as decorations. I down-sized on that last year and will do so this year. My goal now is making the house look festive with the least amount of effort. Door wreaths, pointsettias, some garland with lights over the archway for ambiance, and a Nativity scene that's simple and elegant looking. I don't even do holiday cards any more. Plus we don't have a ton of friends so we rarely have holiday gatherings to go to.

I guess like someone else said, the country is in one big funk. Sort of depressing actually, but yet, it makes one realize, that the holidays got too out of hand over the years anyway with all the commercialism. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise to get folks back to the real and true meaning of the spirit of the holidays!!!!!

Re: Anyone planning now for holidays?

i have a lot of the shopping done. I shop year round. the kids always get one big thing, and then little things. I have done the little things for the most part.
still need to get some of the clothes, and then the big things... not sure what that is yet.

I will once again support 3 angel tree children, each kid will pick one.
and I will do a lot of the christmas for my cousin's kids one is 10 and one is 9.

i don't shop for the extended family.
I just hold on tighter, to a hand that's stronger...he knows my every thought, he clears my weary heart, and hold's on tighter...

Re: Anyone planning now for holidays?

I have already started shopping. DH also found some nice MP3 players on sale at Best Buy and already bought those for the kids. I like to get started early so when the actual Holidays come around I am not in a panic and I can go enjoy the shopping Halloween costumes will be bought the first of October. We won't buy but maybe one bag of candy because we take the kids out so we aren't home to give it out. I put a bowl on the porch and let them take what they want until it is all gone. I am not sure about Thanksgiving yet.

Re: Anyone planning now for holidays?

Been planning for Halloween for almost 2 months now. Begining of August I went into Garden Ridge to look for Halloween and all the Christmas things where out.

DH is going to build a bridge for our cemetary this year. He will make it out of scrap wood. I can't wait to start putting it all up. Collected lots of new things over the summer.

With close to 500 kids coming trick or treating in an hours time we have to start early.

Holy stromboli, VeggieMom!!! 500 kids???!!!!! Even years ago when my 3 were doing the trick or treating thing and the rest of our neighbors had kids similar ages, did we EVER have 500!!!! Probably 100 tops. Not even do our neighborhoods with close together houses get that many!!!

Only thing I'm doing holiday-wise right now is that I'm still looking for recipes. Last year I spent a fortune on melted candy coating. I was thinking that it would be cheaper at off-peak season, so I've been checking it out every week and the price never goes down. So I'm still looking for ways to make it myself cheaper. Any suggestions? I posted here about it once and got no suggestions.
