It's official...

DS will have the Selective Dorsal Ryzotomy surgery (spinal cord). The specialist today is giving her ok, and said DS fits near 100% of the criteria for the best possible out come.

Now the hard part...poor lil guy will be in the hospital (an hour and a half away) for 1 week, then they transport him to a hospital closer (about 40mins) for 3-6 months for intense rehab both PT and OT. I am frightened...but it's the best possible route for him right now.

Of course I will be with him, and now DD (9yo) is falling apart. She is scared to be without me, scared that "Daddy will be watching foorball all the time and forget to feed me!!!" (I kid you not...she said that!) She will be shuffled around, DH will be home with her at night...but it's not the same she said "he doesnt put love into my snacks and lunch!"

I have to either cancel girl scouts, or have 2 mothers step up (my one reliable co-leader doesnt think she can do it with the one whose flighty...)

I guess I'm saying Pray for my family, especially my DS...he's only 3!

I hope that all will go well with your son's surgery. My thoughts will be with all of you.
Don't worry about the scout troop, concentrate on your son, I am sure somebody else can take over and if not, so be it.

If you don't mind me asking - how old is DS? This sounds like a very intense surgery and recovery process.

He turned 3 in May...and he has CP.
If they DONT do the surgery, he has very little chance of walking un-assisted (will need a walker, crutches, etc). With the surgery he has the potential to walk on his own...and they can concentrate on another part of the body.

I know it it a MAJOR sugery...and I have researched it to death. It is DS's BEST option for a normal life. I think at the age of three he will have little memory of it (I HOPE).

Prayers and thoughts are with you and your son. DD will be ok, do have something to set, a timer, or clock, that will ring daily at a certain time to "remind" dad she has to eat? Maybe that will ease her mind. Girlscouts can live without you for a few wks/month until DS is home and recovered enough for you to resume GS!!

Prayers and positive thoughts for your ds's surgery. Have you thought about writing several notes and leaving them for dh to put in dd's lunch each day so she will be reminded of your love. Maybe even choose some special snacks that dad might not think of.

Thank you all. Thear are some wonderful ideas here!

I have alrady started stockpilling (sp?) her favorite snacks and some frozen "homemade" meals (with written instructions right on the freezer bag). I plan on sending a note to the schools social worker, and DD's teacher when we have "the date".

Stashing a few "love notes" for DD is a great idea, and she loves that kind of stuff too! I did plan on calling her every day, and I plan to send her to school with a cell phone so she can call during recess (good for nothing BIATCH of principle wont let her go to the nurse to call when she's upset or worried...she has to wait till recess ).

Anyway, trying to get things settled around her, and will be picking up a few items for DS to play with in the hospital. Sorry if I dont catch up with all...
