For “A Christmas Story” fans...
Excerpts from Jean Shepherd’s book:
“Life is like that. Sometimes, at the height of our reveries, when our joy is at its zenith, when all is right with the world, the most unthinkable disasters descend upon us...”
“Bumpases! You sons of business! You frabjabbling wangdoodling Bumpases!”
“The heavenly aroma still hung heavy in the house, but the turkey was gone! No turkey! No turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, turkey gravy, turkey hash, turkey a la king! No gallons of turkey soup! It was gone! All gone!”
[My note: Sometimes all we can do is smooth our clothes, turn away from the problem and try to reclaim some of our dignity! No, no, never mind that the screen door is about to fall off!]
“All right. Everybody get dressed and get your coats. We’re going to eat at the chop suey joint for Christmas dinner.”
Waiters [singing]: Deck the halls with boughs of horry, ra ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra.
Chop Suey Palace owner: No, no, not 'ra ra ra ra', 'la la la la'! Try again.
Waiters: Deck the halls with boughs of horry, ra ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra.
Owner: No, no! Sing something else.
Owner: Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sreigh!
“It’s smiling at me.”
“That Christmas, Peking duck stood in for turkey... It was a good Christmas, because we had love; we had each other. And in the final accounting, that’s what it’s all about after all.”
“Safe and snug in my warm bed, I could hear the falling snow brushing softly against the window. Next to me lay my oiled blue-steel beauty...”
