  • Birthday Dinner for an 8-year-old

Our middle grandson turned 8 years old today and we just had a zoom call. The family is going out for dinner tonight (parents and two other brothers) and his requested dinner is going to a sushi restaurant to eat salmon sushi. I just about want to gag. What 8-year-old and his brothers, ages 11 and 5 eat sushi??? I guess they are tired of pizza which of course they eat too. His birthday party is tomorrow with racing go carts. I guess when it is your birthday, you pick whatever you want.

It really does surprise me the amount of young kids that eat 'untypical' kids food. Friends of our DS have two daughters ages 5 & 8, they both request things like filet mignon/sauteed mushrooms, broccoli. We all went out once to celebrate DS BD along with same friends to a sushi restaurant, kids ate right along with the parents...we were like huh????? Heck, I won't even try sushi! Our 2nd DS made a request for meatloaf for his 8th BD hahaha.

I personally don't know any kids that age that eat sushi. Hamburgers and pizza seem to be the favorites.
I love sushi. Not the kind you get at your grocery store, but the kind you get in a good sushi restaurant. Where they make in front of you.
Vera , how are your son and family like Houston ? Have they gotten used to the texas way of life ?

Sabine - My son was up in the DC area two weeks ago to attend a charity golf tournament, but he came up early to work out of his main office in Virginia for a few days to make the trip worth the cost. I asked him that very same question. He said they haven't been home long enough to establish a routine yet. Traveling soccer keeps them on the move on weekends such as Dallas, Austin and Oklahoma City. They just finished up a remodeling job of the main floor (kitchen, family room, eating area, laundry room, office) and now have started on the main floor master bathroom. Of course, I'm sure my son will tease me and his dad when we get hit with a snowstorm and they are walking around with no coats on. Right now, the two older kids can walk to school and the Montessori school is next door for the 5-year-old. I'm jealous that they can drive to the H.E.B. Plus store in five minutes. I am 10-12 miles from any grocery store, depending on which one I go too. I got spoiled while I was with them this past summer.

The family did go to a sushi restaurant where they make it in front of you. They are probably there right now as I type this since Texas is an hour behind us. I just can't imagine kids that age eating it. Bet they have pizza tomorrow for the birthday party though!!

That is nice that the kids are able to walk to school, beats the school bus or a parent having to drive. Remodeling is always a big pain, been there done that. I am sure you will have done that also. Give them some time and they will get into a routine.
My 2 grandsons ( high school age ) are both playing football and there are so many out of town games that my son and dil go to on weekends. And if it isn't football , its basketball. Those are the busy years.

I really like sushi. I tried it for the first time about 5 years ago. A lot of young children eat sushi in Australia. At our local shopping centre in Melbourne during school holidays, so many people buy sushi for their children at the food court. It's healthy and easy to eat. Immy's favourite part is the seaweed wrapping. My favourite is salmon and avocado... Immy's favourite is anything called sushi. I know Julia eats vegetarian sushi but I don't know if either of the children do.

I have twin grandkids that love sushi. Their birthday is coming up
so I'll give them $$ and at Sam's Club they now have people making
sushi platters. That will be an add on surprise for them.
I didn't understand the desire for sushi either-especially in young ones

Snack time for my great nephews, the three year old snagged a whole tub of hummus and a bag of fresh veggies, the five year old grabbed a whole baguette and the butter dish!
When I was three I was sneaking out to the garage to eat the dog's "chocolate flavored" dog biscuits! LOL

Now I want Sushi. I don’t have a clue yet for dinner. I wanted pizza but have ground beef thawing so I believe it is taco night at my house.

When I was young, perhaps 4, I ate chocolate laxatives - hey, it was chocolate! I don't have a memory of what happened afterwards though - lol. Chocolate is chocolate, right?

Not when it is a laxative, Vera.
