  • New Product To Me

I always like to read about 'new to me' products. I saw one the other day that got rave reviews - not a bad review in the bunch. Luckily, our Wegmans grocery store had it on their website and I was there this morning, so I picked it up in their international aisle. The reviews said once you taste this mayo, you will never go back to your former mayo. It is called Kewpie Mayonnaise. It is Japanese. Unlike the mayos we are familiar with that use eggs, this mayo only uses egg yolks and produces a much creamier product. I just opened up my squeeze bottle and it tastes pretty good. I don't have a need at the moment because I already have egg salad and tuna in the fridge. Interesting product but it needs a taste test mixed with something.

    Hello Vera,

I've heard of mayo made from seaweed but never tried it.I'll bet the "Kewpie"brand is good!

That is a new one on me. For years I used Helmans but now I primarily use Dukes mayonnaise.

MommaBear - I use Hellmans or on the west coast it is called Best Foods, I tried Dukes once, but it is on the sweeter side, and I went back to Hellmans.

D'sMom - No seaweed in the ingredients. It is made in the USA (according to the label) but has Japanese origins. It has a slight yellow color from the egg yolks.

I did try to find Muzette7's cranberry beans but couldn't locate them. Went to two Mexican grocery stores and not even my local Wegmans carried them. There were one or two other names that these beans went by but I had no luck. Even Shoppers Food Warehouse, which has heavy stocked Latino aisles (3 of them) and didn't have them, so I gave up. I am usually like a Rottweiler when I am looking for something, but it didn't work out this time. I don't want to order online since I only wanted to get one bag, but it is not to be.

I have to say its an aquired taste, I do not really care for it. I do like it mixed with siraccha or horseradish though.

The Kewpie mayonnaise is similar to what my Mum used to make... egg yolks, vinegar and mustard powder. It's good for a diabetic diet because it doesn't have added sugar. The supply on the shelves here are made in Thailand.

A food that is new to me is calamari rings. I'd never been brave enough to try it but I did one night that I was watching the children for Julia. It was battered and fried and tasted very similar to prawn meat.

Chayote, I love fried calamari! Ken and I would always order it in places that served them. I learned how to make it during all the restaurant shutdowns in 2020. Walmart sells bags of frozen raw rings and tentacles and I found a great recipe for the coating. Yum!

Sounds great, Charlene. I don't want to learn how to cook it myself. I'm cutting down on meals that require time spent in the kitchen. Some might call it being lazy but I'm really just tired of cooking every night. We have a local takeaway outlet near us that cooks beautiful fish. Not so keen on their chips but we don't need them. What I really love from there is their prawn pack... 6 crumbed prawns that are freshly cooked, 6 pieces of calamari and served with coleslaw.

Chayote, I probably won’t be making it for myself now either, it’s extremely messy to make, but I did because we just couldn’t get it anywhere for awhile. I think if there was a place close that did seafood like the place you have I’d be a frequent customer too!

Although I said on the dinner thread that I enjoyed our meal from the fish'n'chip shop last night, the calamari was actually pretty terrible. It was crumbed, not battered and when I opened the bag there were naked calamari rings and half a bag of fried breadcrumbs. I was very disappointed because the shop we go to is usually very good. It might have just been an off night for them but I will mention it to the cooks next time I'm there.
