  • January 20th Dinner Post

    Good Morning!

It is just plain cold out with wind, rain and snow. Ick! The high of 36 and the low of 28 but the windchill will make it feel like the low 20's.

I had a hurry up and get dressed phone call this morning from DGS as his car stopped dead in the road going into work. I called a friend, she rode with me, she took my car and DGS, and they went on their way while I waited for roadside assistance. We both bundle together along with the house so we can do for each other in a situation like that. She was back and I was still waiting and finally just got home. This was at 6:15 this morning and the tow showed up at nine. We were both so grateful it was not a frigid morning out. I keep my car ready for being stranded so we were warm and chatting away.

Dinner will be leftovers from last night as DGS loved it. He asked what it is called and got my reply of "food" and laughed per usual.

What will you be having cold wintry Friday night?
Heritic, rebel, a thing to flount,
He drew a circle that shut me out.
But love and I had the wit to win,
We drew a circle that took him in.

It must be kids car trouble week. My kid locked his keys in the car at the gas station and it took 2 hours for the tow guy to come. Shooting for black pepper chicken tonight.

I finally got the bird in the oven today! Bit later than I had hoped as my SIL dropped in to have a little visit with Kian. So far, a great time with the lil guy
Turkey, stuffing/gravy with roasted potatoes and turnip will be dinner!

I have a coiled key ring that I put around my wrist. If I am in a vehicle that doesn't use a key but a key FOB, it dangles from my left wrist. If I am in another vehicle that uses a real key to start, I automatically take it out of the slot and put it on my wrist when I exit the vehicle. I have a girlfriend who had the same car as me, but she lived in Connecticut. She was putting groceries in her trunk and put the keys in her pants pocket. When she got home, she decided to do laundry and washed the pants she was wearing - you guessed it, she washed the transmitter. Back then, 2013, it cost $265 for a new key FOB. I sent her one of the coiled wrist bands and now she does what I do. You can't drop your keys, yet it keeps your hands free. Every hardware store has them for less than $5. and they come is many colors. I have one for each of our vehicles all color coded so I know which key I am grabbing in the hollows of my purse.

It’s a beautiful day today, clear sky and bright sunshine. I’ve been busy doing little things around the house and then took a late shower. I figured I’d need it more when I was done than I would before I started. I need to go out to the shed and get a new furnace filter out, my thermostat is showing a message that it needs to be replaced soon. I figured it was about due. Not much else happening today.

I’m trying out a new to me pressure cooker (actually, Instant Pot but it’s so easy to adapt to electric pressure cooker) Roasted Orzo with Shrimp and Feta. I’ll have some salad with it.

After a couple of weeks of warmer weather... today we head back into winter. I have no clue what's for dinner. I have quite a few costco easy heat ups... but none of them sound good.

I made a pot of chili today but had some for lunch. Tonight I think I will fix a taco. I saved some meat out for that purpose.

Some idiot called and tried to scam me today. Trying to tell me he was my Grandson. When my husband passed away I had the same thing happen. You always need to be cautious on the phone.

                have a good evening

We ate out with our family for dinner... it was at a tavern about 5 minutes drive from our new home. It was so nice there. There was an indoor play room that Andrew and Hannah loved. The food was *so* good. John had a small steak with mashed potato and vegetables. I had a prawn and avocado salad and I scraped that plate clean! I feel sure it will be our favourite place to eat. Even better, they give a 20% discount for people with a Seniors card. The only way it could be better would be if they had poker tournaments.

MommaBear... I've read about people receiving these calls and so many people fall for them and lose money. If the scammers used text messages I can understand why people would have difficulty knowing it was a scam, especially when the scammers write that the grandson has lost his phone and had to buy another, explaining the different number. Did the scammer actually speak to you? I assume you would immediately know that it's not a voice you would recognise. If I was targeted I would know immediately as my grandson is only 6 years old. I'd be interested to hear more about your experience with scammers.

My mother got one of those calls several years ago and she was all set to withdraw a bunch of cash for it. She probably would have done it if I hadn’t been there. It was supposedly for Joshua in Costa Rica. I called Joshua (in Oregon!) to confirm it wasn’t him and told her to never fall for that. I got one a few years ago, got the spiel on the phone about “grandson” so I called him a completely different name and he said it was him. HA! Gotcha! No one in the family with that name!

Last year we received three of those phone calls spread out over about a month. Of course, we knew it was a scam - oldest grandson is only 11 years old. When we got the last one, my husband answered the phone and when he heard it was our "grandson", he said, "when did you get out of jail"! We laughed about that one for a long time. It boggles my mind how anyone could fall for such a scheme. Unbelievable

Don't answer your phone if you don't know the number that shows up.
same goes for text messages, don't respond to text messages , they always show a name or # where they come from
don't respond, it's really very simple.

I can understand Charlene's Mom's confusion. It's usually elderly people who fall for schemes like that because they lived in more trusting times than we have now. Not everyone have sharp minds and sometimes they give out personal information without even realising what they are doing. We live in a cynical world where many older people didn't make the transition to the digital era. John is one of those people and I have to constantly remind him not to click on links that he might receive in text messages.

Sabine - We don't answer every phone call because you can tell by the number if it is an 888, 800 or un unfamiliar area code etc. However, my husband does receive calls from out of state and he does answer some of them. If I suspect a spam call, I pick up the phone and I don't say anything. The computer at the other end then connects you to the 'caller'. When I hear 'hello, hello", I hang up. Our phone does not give the name because it is a wireless connection. When we had a hard line, it would give the name. So, now it is a guessing game. My husband's cell phone does give the area it is calling from, and he doesn't answer when it is a place he doesn't know. Me, I hardly use my cell phone. I turned it on today for the first time since January 6th because I will be leaving the house and need to stay connected.
