  • January 21st Dinner Post

    Good Morning!

It is overcast and the snow is covering roof tops and the ground. It was spitting snow off and on yesterday but decided it should get serious about it overnight. The high today will be 36 and the low of 29.

Today is a good day for vegetable beef soup with homemade rolls and chocolate pudding cake.

What will you be having this Saturday night for your meal?

We had a quiet day at home, mainly watching the tennis on TV.

Dinner was BBQ'd chicken wings and a garden salad. John insisted that he wanted me to go back to buying iceberg lettuce so now he has to have salads every few days to use it up. I'm not a fan of iceberg lettuce... no taste and it rots in the fridge very quickly. I prefer Cos lettuce.

Going out tomorrow to meet Julia at Ikea. I need to buy a bookcase which I've already done using 'click and collect'... she and the children are going to meet us at the Ikea food court for lunch.

It's gray and cold 30° now. High 38 low 28. Snow is suppose to start this afternoon.
I'm making beef stew. Would love some home made bread but that's not going to happen. Yeast and I are not friends.

Have you tried a bread machine? You just put the dry yeast in on top of the flour so no proofing. I never bake in the bread machine, I take out the dough, form, let rise and bake. My hands just don't like the kneading anymore from crocheting so much. I love the rhythm of it and always found it so calming but the aroma and flavor tells me it does not matter who or what kneads it. Look around and you can find them in so many places where people have donated. and they are pretty reasonable. Just a thought.

I've had one for many many many yrs. I don't think I've used it in at least 15 yrs. I bought the bread flour, yeast for bread machines I've tried everything it never turns out good. So I gave up yrs ago. + today I don't want to dress go to store for yeast. So we'll just have keto bread and butter.

chayote: we used to have a green salad of some sort 3 or 4 times a week, but the prices are so high I stopped buying it....ice berg is usually $5.99 and a bag of 3 romaine hearts is $8.99...ridiculous! I did buy ice berg at Christmas time so we could put it on our turkey sandwiches.

rosie & livetobake: I have a bread machine that I rarely use....I was clearing out some things last year and posted the machine on a Things for Free fb market place, had only one interested person and she never got back to me so the machine still sits down stairs on the shelf. Now that the bread prices are thru the roof, I thought after all it was a good thing that I still have it and should use it again....I would think this would be cheaper than store bought bread? I regular loaf of white bread here is approx $4.59

Hubby and I are going to have more cabbage rolls for dinner, and then we will have leftover turkey tomorrow nite so that DS can join in too.

Oh rosie, you are my soul sister! Yeast and I made an agreement years ago, I won’t burn it up and it won’t embarrass me! We never ate enough bread to justify making it.

lol. I was ask by a friend that has a local coffee shop if I could bake cinnamon rolls for the shop. He just couldn't believe I couldn't do anything with yeast.

It’s been rainy on and off all day today and a bit on the cold side too. I stayed up way too late last night binge watching Season 1 of Yellowjackets on Showtime, it was much better than I expected it to be. I’ve been doing a few “busy work” things around the house, I’m guessing tomorrow will be laundry day, woo hoo! So much excitement!

I’ve got a bunch of really good leftovers in the fridge to use up and/or freeze. I think tonight will be the rest of the green chile quiche and some roasted asparagus.

Iceberg lettuce prices went through the roof before Christmas. I didn't buy them but it was on the news that lettuces were up to $18 each and that Macca's and KFC were using Chinese cabbage instead of lettuce. I don't know what the big deal is with lettuces. They are basically 90% water and have very little taste. I buy cos lettuces and baby spinach for salads.
