Well, I am going to do it again. Last year I held a tea for the ladies, an ice cream social, a soup and sandwich gathering for after our annual meeting and now I decided I am going to do a "Who Are You, Who, Who, Who, Who (song by The Who). I have asked everyone to bring a heritage dish passed down or just created last week - it qualifies whether you are German, Italian, French, Irish, Alien or Zombie. It will be April 14th, a Friday, because when weather gets nice, it is more difficult to bring people together on a weekend. I am making Noodla (that is what my mom called it) and it consists of bacon, onion and sauerkraut and a loaf of bread dough allowed to rise (my mom made hers from scratch), then pulled off and rolled into little noodles and dropped into a bacon broth. Boil the dough in the broth for about 15 minutes and then add the bacon and onion back in with a can of rinsed sauerkraut. I don't know if my mom made up this recipe, but everyone loves it. Only once did I try to make her German potato dumplings, but it was a fail. You have to have the right touch with practice because potatoes all have different moisture contents. Mine tasted like flour balls so I never attempted to make it again. I have a few small German flags that I will put on my serving table next to my dish. Can't wait to dress my table. A nice table makes people whet their appetites.

Neighborhood Get Together

It sounds like a great idea, Vera. For one, it's nice that your neighbors have a get together. We are one of several long time neighbors (35 plus years) on our street, and while we all get along and chit chat if we see each other outside, we don't get together. Secondly, it's a fun theme for a luncheon! I don't know what I would bring though. I'm a mutt: Less than 50% German along with English, Irish, Norwegian, Italian, French, Scottish, and Dutch. Please post a picture of your table (as you have done in the past) and tell us what dishes the neighbors brought.

Hi Home Buddy - This will actually be a dinner. I just got back from Michael's craft store to find some inspiration on things for my table. I did buy two navy blue long candles that will float in water, a glittery spool of silver matting (12 inches x35 feet) that I will use as a table runner over a white cloth. I need 120 inches for my table. Then I spied some silver pipe cleaners that I will use as napkin rings on white napkins. I am again using my wedding China that is light blue with white lace and silver trim. I will probably buy some Jelly Belly beans in appropriate colors. Next to my dish at my kitchen table will be black, red and yellow beans for Germany and on the dining table blue and white. Heck, Home Buddy, you're not a mutt, you are a worldly person - just pick a country!! This get together isn't until April 14th. I will take pictures.

Sounds like another big party Vera, I like the theme" who are you and what is your family heritage" . I can think of so many different dishes from the above mentioned countries. Sounds like a fun party.
Born and raised in Germany but I have never heard of " Noodla ". Wish I could taste it.Last edited by Sabine; 03-22-2023, 04:55 PM.

This sounds great Vera. You're having it on my b-day,April 14.Wish that I was joining your get-together then.
My DH's dad was of german derivation. He & his mother used to make a stuffed noodle which was filled with dry cheese, beaten eggs, chives, salt & pepper. It was boiled, then fried in a little butter, then sprinkled over. with buttered bread crumbs. It was called,"Monaglaze(sp.?)
The 2nd dish was bread dough squares indiviually filled with sauted chopped ,green cabbage, chopped onions, lean ground beef, salt & pepper.then baked till brown & done.It was called Kraut Kuga.I think in Nebraska a dish like this was served in a restaurant & they were called,Runsas or something like that..
My maternal GGmother was very adapt at making wonderful german dishes. She use to make a great coffee cake, german potato salad, stuffed her own sausages etc...I am salivating just thinking of her great cooking!!Wish that I could go back in time to eat this yummy cuisine again!

D's Mom - Well, come on over!! I am not familiar with the dishes you tasted but they sound like good family recipes. Since we are a small neighborhood, I will probably get four or five different dishes. I know one neighbor is very Italian and I was hoping she would make her meatballs, but she said she is bringing tortellini salad. People can bring what they want but I wish it would have been the meatballs. That is why I've got to provide a protein (ham) because people do have a tendency to make something quick and easy. Wonder what the other dishes will be? Stay tuned..... And, I guess we can raise a glass of wine in celebration of your birthday!!!

All sounds amazing, Vera. You're very good at your table decorations and I'm sure it will be on par with what we've seen from you. Can't wait to see it. When it's ready, email me your photos and I'll upload them for you...
When you mentioned the different countries, I started thinking about the restaurants around Gawler where we live. At the end of our street we've seen an Indian restaurant that never has any cars there. We are wondering how long they can last without customers. There's a Chinese restaurant that I've heard is excellent. I'd love to go but John has a very restricted diet. Hopefully I'll get there one day, even if it's only for take-away. There's another Asian restaurant further down the main road but I'm not sure which country... looks Japanese maybe? There are numerous pizza take-aways and one Italian restaurant called Fasta Pasta. No German restaurants and surprisingly, no Alien or Zombie restaurants either...
