Julia drove over to the house today and took a photo. The bricklayer is doing a great job. He's working alone so he's taking longer than when a builder sends a team of bricklayers in and finishes in two days. There are not enough registered bricklayers to do that any more. He told us that he's willing to take on an apprentice but no-one has come forward in the past year. Apparently not many young people want to be bricklayers.

Chayote - Before you know it, you will be moving in. Are a lot of houses brick in that area? If so, there would be a high demand for bricklayers with good wages I would think. At least your house is all enclosed now. Is there progress inside as well? Is the estimated date still sometime this summer? Thanks for the update, always like to see the pictures.

g'day, Vera... it's looking more like a house now with bricks. He still needs to do the front of the house and down the side of the garage.

The vast majority of new builds are brick in Australia. At one time houses had weatherboards instead of brick but soon they became too expensive as the price of timber went up. Even cheaper houses are still made of brick but they are lighter bricks with the colour being applied to the outside edge. Our bricks are solid, full colour and heavy. There's a row of new builds across the road from where we are renting and we've watched the work happening on the end one because they had the same builders as us. The big difference is the one across the road is the most basic level that the builder offers... no choices on anything and no changes allowed, three bedroom, one living area homes, no frills. They are great for young people to enter the real-estate market.

Estimated date is still late August but because it's about the same time as my surgery, we won't be moving right away. There are things that Julia will still need to do, like getting window blinds and concreting the driveway and paths.

I would imagine that being a bricklayer is hard work, and you are outside all the time. If you do that kind of work here in south texas , the summers are very hot, and then if we have bad weather you don't work. I am pretty sure bricklayers are paid by the hour. No work, no pay. Can't blame anybody not wanting that kind of job.
I know that we here in south Texas have a lot of bricklayers coming over from Mexico to do jobs like that, illegal, yep I am sure most of them are. And I am not talking about the kind of illegals that are coming over now.

It’s looking great Chayote! I love having a single story home again, and yours looks like just my style. We didn’t even consider a 2 story when we moved, we’d had more than enough of that in California.

Thank you for all your nice comments on our house. We are excitedly looking forward to moving in. Charlene... I always wanted to live in a two storey home but not now. I'm very pleased that there are no stairs at all inside and just one step in the backyard which will have a hand rail.
