    Buckwheat
    Posted September 27, 2005 10:11 PM

Hummmm, we had these tonight, and my daughter just finished the last one. House smells sooooo good Smile If you try them, I hope you like them.

    2 packages dry yeast
    1/3 cup warm water
    1&1/2 cups warm milk
1/3 cup shortening (I used butter flavored Crisco)
    1/4 cup sugar
    2 t. salt
    2 t. nutmeg (fresh ground)
    3 eggs, well beaten
4&1/2 cups all purpose flour (White Lily)
    1 stick melted butter

PREHEAT you oven to 450 (you need a fast oven)

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
Put the milk and shortening in a saucepan and warm until the shortening is melted on a low fire.
Set aside and allow to cool to lukewarm.
Pour the yeast mixture into a bowl and add the milk mixture and 2 cups of the flour.
    Beat until well mixed.
Add remaining flour and the remaining ingredients and mix well.
Cover your bowl and let the dough rise until doubled.
Turn out the dough on a lightly floured board and pat it out & down until it is 1/2 inch thick.

Use a donut cutter and cut out your donuts, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet and let rise for about 20 minutes. (you will smell them)
Bake in a well preheated oven for about 10 minutes until they are golden brown.

You can dip them in sugar/cinnamon mixture, or powdered sugar, or glaze them, or just plain.
We did a few of each.

    NOTE:
Need some fresh, cold milk with these!
