    2 T. butter
    1/2 cup diced onion
    1/4 cup chopped green pepper
    1 lb. hamburger
    1-lb. 12 oz. tomatoes
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. sugar
    1/4 tsp. thyme
    1 small bay leaf
    1 1/2 cups precooked rice

    Brown hamburger with butter, onions and peppers.
    Spoon off excess fat. Drain tomatoes, measuring juice. Add water to juice to make 1 1/2 cups liquid. Add liquid, tomatoes, salt, sugar, thyme and bay leaf to mixture in skillet. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in rice; cover and simmer 5 minutes longer. Discard bay leaf. This also makes a great filling for stuffed green peppers.
