Here is my chili recipe, a family favorite for over 30 years.
1 lb Hamburger meat ( I use coarsly ground meat, especially for chili)
1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 garlic cloves, I leave them whole, so I can fish them out before serving
1 onion chopped
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon oregano
1 bay leaf
4 tablespoons flour
2 cups water
1 cup tomato juice
Brown meat, drain, add onions and spices. Mix well. Add flour, let it cook on low for a couple of minutes, add water and tomato juice. It will thicken as it cooks. Simmer for 1 hour or longer. You may need to add more water. Taste, and add salt or chili powder if needed. Remove bay leaf and garlic before serving.
Sometimes I use some italian sausage with the hamburger meat, like half and half.
My girlfriend uses cubed chuck roast instead of hamburger meat.
For those who like beans, you can add them or serve them on the side.
