Hereís a great idea for a casserole made with onions and apples. It has to bake for about 45 minutes - but it only takes about 10 minutes to put it together - and onions and apples could make an entire dinner with some grilled sausages served alongside - or some cheddar cheese melted over.

To make four servings, youíll need 4 large onions and 4 good-sized apples. Youíll also need 8 slices of bacon and about ĺ cup of broth. Any kind of broth - chicken is a good one - or even water - will do. Peel and slice the onions, then core and peel the apples, and slice them to about the same thickness as you sliced the onions. In a skillet, cook the 8 slices of bacon, and drain the cooked bacon on paper towels. In a spoonful of the bacon fat (discard the rest), toast a half cup of soft bread crumbs - and set the toasted crumbs aside for later. Crumble or chop the bacon.

Now, in a baking dish, layer the sliced apples, sliced onions and crumbled bacon - then pour over about ĺ cup of hot broth. In a moderately hot oven - about 375 - bake the casserole covered for a half hour - then uncover the dish and top with the toasted breadcrumbs. Bake it for another 15 minutes - and itís ready to serve - as I say, great with some cheddar cheese melted over the top just before serving - or with grilled sausages alongside.

A cozy dinner for 4 for about $6.
