    Herb and Onion Savory Waffles

    2 large eggs separated

    1 3/4 C. milk

    6 T. melted butter

    2 C. flour

    1/2 t. salt

    1 T. baking powder

    2 T. grated onion

    1/2 t. sage

    1/2 t. thyme

    1 T. fresh chopped parsley.

    Heat waffle iron. Beat egg whites until stiff and set aside.

    In a medium size bowl, combine egg yolks, milk and melted butter. Add flour, salt and baking powder. Stir to blend well. Add the onion and spices. Fold in the egg whites until just mixed.

    Spray with oil the grids on the waffle iron. Ladle or pour enough batter to cover two-thirds of the grid. Close the waffle grill and cook until the steam stops, about 5 minutes. When the waffle is done, lift the lid and remove the waffle with a fork. Repeat with remaining batter.

    Savory Herb Waffles

    "These are not a sweet waffle! I use them to serve creamed beef or chicken for a quick, easy supper. They are very light, very tasty, and they smell heavenly."
    Original recipe yield: 6 Servings.

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
    • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
    • 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon
    • 1 1/2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese
    • 2 cups buttermilk
    • 3 eggs, separated
    • 2/3 cup light sour cream
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

    1. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic salt, parsley, rosemary and tarragon. Stir in the shredded Gouda. Set aside.
    2. In another bowl, mix together the egg yolks, buttermilk, sour cream and vegetable oil until well blended. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture, and stir until just blended. In a separate clean bowl, whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold into the waffle batter.
    3. Heat the waffle iron, and grease with vegetable oil spray. Use the recommended amount of batter for each waffle according to your iron. Close the lid, and cook until golden brown. Waffles can be held in a warm oven while the others are cooking. Serve with creamed beef or chicken.


    Buttermilk waffles with an onion flare. Makes 5 waffles

    1 egg
    2 cups (500 ml) buttermilk biscuit mix
    2 tbsp. (30 ml) dry onion soup mix
    1-1/3 cups (325 ml) milk
    3 tbsp. (30 ml) vegetable oil

    • Preheat Sunbeam® Waffle Maker.

    • In blender container, place ingredients in order listed. Cover and process at a medium-high speed until dry ingredients are moistened. Do not over blend.

    • Pour 1/2 cup (125 ml) batter over grids. Close waffle maker. Bake until steam no longer escapes, about 5 minutes. Remove waffle to warm serving platter and repeat procedure with remaining batter.
